Experience of Korean traditional Market - Banyawol five-day interval village market in Daegu

Experience of Korean traditional Market - Banyawol five-day interval village market in Daegu
Have you heard of a five-day interval village market?

In Korea, There is a traditional market that is held every 5 days. Five-day market culture dates back all the way back to Joseon dynasty and it used to be where manufacturers like farmers, craftsman, fishermen, and etc. met in set date and space to barter items.

There is Banyawol five-day market in Daegu. On the days the market is open, you can find the place crowded with people, sellers, all sorts of agricultural and marine products, and basic necessities such as shoes and clothes. These items have good qualities and are very cheap.

Fried fish cakes, traditional snacks, grains, freshly baked bread and fresh fruits, and delicious looking foods catch people’s eyes. There are some nice vendors that let the customers test-try some of their products or the fruits and these are the charm of Korean traditional markets.

Banyawol five day market in Daegu is held on dates that end with 1 or 6(1, 6, 11, 16, 21, 26). When it falls on the 31st, then it is held on the 1st of the next month.

Leisure Activity For Weekends - 2 Wheel Electric Scooter Riding along Geumho Riverside in Yulha Sports Park, Korea

Leisure Activity - 2 Wheel Electric Scooter Riding along Geumho Riverside
Leisure Activity - 2 Wheel Electric Scooter Riding along Geumho Riverside

Electric scooters have been going viral in Korea recently, and among them, the ones with 2 big wheels are most popular. These big-wheeled scooters (왕발통_Wangbaltong) look like electric kick boards that need both feet on the board. It is relatively easy to ride and that gets it the attention as a new form of recreational activities in the young generation.

The stores that sell these big-wheeled scooters are located around the Yulha sports park and you can rent them along with knee pads. You may get a short 1:1 lesson from the store owner before starting.

For safety, you can only ride along the riverside road in the park.
You will find people biking and jogging in the riverside road with a fair view. Flame grass and Geumho River swamp stretches out on the side, and you will delightfully enjoy riding watching them.

How do you like going on big-wheeled scooter riding with a refreshing view this weekend? :)

Bukseongro Tools Museum in Daegu Industrial Tools Street - Time Travels into Modern History of Korea

Bukseongro Tools Museum in Daegu Industrial Tools Street Bukseongro Tools Museum in Daegu Industrial Tools Street

Daegu had a fortress around downtown, which was called Daegu Eupseong, and Bukseongro was the north area of it. Now there is Bukseongro Tools Street with lots of tool shops.

In the Bukseongro Tools Street, modern histories of Korea and breathing new life are found. There are remodeled buildings that originally built in the Japanese colonial era.
Lately, this area has changed to host projects to attract tourists. Visit a tourists’ café, an arts shop which sells local artists’ works, and the Tools Museum.

In 1947, when there were not tools manufactured locally, people who had collected used tools from a U.S. military base started a business on the street. This was the beginning of Daegu’s Tools Street which made an increasing number of related businesses and eventually created a shopping district for tools, forming the Tool Street you see now days.

Currently, the street is a great source of various kinds of industrial tools. Furthermore, the Bukseongro Tools Museum, which embodies the modern history and the joy and sorrows of the street, is also found here.

Do you know why there are so many beautiful women in Daegu? Pyeonggwang-dong Apples Village in Korea

Pyeonggwang-dong Apples Village in Daegu

Do you know why there are so many beautiful women in Daegu?
Many Korean beauty competition winners came from Daegu, declaring that the secret of their beauty is in the apples. Daegu apples are exceptionally sweet and delicious, and include plenty of fiber.

Pyeonggwang-dong Apples Village in Daegu is the location for harvest of the most number of apples, which contain a huge level of Vitamin C. The apples are the top of the special regional products of Daegu and are harvested in Pyeonggwang-dong, a collective cultivation site of 116 year-long tradition.

Daegu, compared to the other areas, is quite warm with only few occasions of rainfall. This was perfect for harvesting apples. From 1960’s until the early 1970’s, the apple harvest amounted up to 80% of that of the entire nation.

If you come to Wanggeon-gil of Pyeonggwang-dong, you will find our country’s oldest tree, an 85-year old hongok apple(Jonathan apple) tree and the ‘Flower of Kent’, which is of the Newton’s apple tree’s species.

△ The direct descendant of Daegu's first apple tree in Cheongna Hill

The first apple tree of Daegu was planted by Johnson, a missionary of Keimyung university's Dongsan hospital in 1899. You can see the direct descendant of Daegu's first apple tree in Cheongna Hill located near the Dongsan medical missionary museum. This tree was grown from the seed of the first apple tree that led Daegu to become a major apple producer.
