Like a day spent living in a painting!

- From enjoying picturesque scenery from the Mt Palgongsan Cable Car to visiting the gallery cafe TITF

Without noticing it, the middle of spring has crept up on us all. As of April 18th, social distancing was completely lifted in Korea. People are making travel plans to enjoy spring and, thanks to this, Daegu's tourist destinations are brimming with visitors. Among the several tourist destinations in Daegu, mountains have been increasingly more popular these days. People that have longed for fresh air are coming out to visit Daegu’s mountains and enjoy their incredible scenery. The most popular one is of course Palgongsan (Mt. Palgong), endlessly loved by both locals and tourists.

The scenery of Palgongsan Mountain from 820m above sea level

Mt. Palgong is one of the mountains that represents Daegu. Not being too far from the city center, many local residents visit to enjoy nature’s therapy. Mt. Palgong also features several attractions such as is its unobstructed views, cable car, the Wish Rock (Sowon Bawi) and many more that are hugely popular with the tourists too.

Mt. Palgong, seen from above, is said to resemble the shape of a soaring Bonghwang (a mythical bird that is the equivalent of the phoenix). Some even say that you can receive good energy from it. Also, the shape and position of three boulders in Mt. Palgong look as if the Bonghwang is incubating its eggs and these boulders are therefore, also very popular for the good energy it emits.

Entrance to Mt. Palgong Cable Car Platform

Mt. Palgong is steep and rugged so a lot of visitors wisely use the cable car. Up to 6 people can ride on board each cabin and the adult round-trip fare is 11,000 KRW. It takes about 7 minutes to reach the upper terminus.

A view of Mt. Palgong from the cable car

Many tourists say that the view of Mt. Palgong that unfolds before them from inside the cable car is breathtaking. The cable car route to the top offers unobstructed panorama so that visitors will feel as if they are soaring over the land. Some visitors even say it is so thrilling that it sets their pulse racing.

The “Wish Rock” That keeps your heartfelt wishes.

After getting off the cable car and continuing to your right, you’ll be able to see the Wish Rock. You can see that the rock is densely plastered with coins. The local legend that if your coin sticks to the rock while making a wish, it’ll come true. Locals visit the Wish Rock when very important exams or other wishes are coming up. Before you visit, make sure you have enough coins if you’d like to make a wish.

The Tunnel of Love” that strengthens your love for each other

If you follow the trail, you’ll come across the “Tunnel of Love”. This is another popular destination on Mt. Palgong. Here, there’s a statue of a “Key eating tiger”. Leave a message pledging your love, lock it with a padlock and put the key in the tiger’s mouth. It is said the tiger will protect your love if your heart is true.

A message left by a visitor: “I hope Covid-19 ends soon”

A message wishing for COVID-19 to be over soon stood out from among the countless messages in the tunnel. Since social distancing in Korea has been lifted, I hope that the person who wrote it will be able to return to Mt. Palgong with a peaceful heart and recall making the wish.

There are a lot of photo zones on Mt. Palgong where you can enjoy spectacular views of the mountain. One of the charms of visiting here is finding these places and taking photos and selfies. Try to find the heart frame! It features the scenery and a hashtag speech bubble. You would’ve completed your journey on the mountain while searching for these photo zones!

Hiking around the mountain seeking tourist destinations inevitably leads to an empty stomach. If hunger hits you, visit TITF, a popular café on Mt Palgong. Gallery Cafe TITF, with its impressive white exterior, is a trendy place where you can enjoy delicious pastries and art exhibitions at the same time. The cafe is well known for its beautiful interior, spacious parking, and delicious baking. For these reasons, it is visited not just by locals, but also by tourists from all over the country and overseas.

After viewing the artworks, we recommend that you appreciate the panoramic view of Mt. Palgong from the café’s stunning rooftop. Even the canopy swaying gently in the breeze seems like a work of art.
