Finding Hidden Restaurants in Daegu 2: Daegu-style Pork Soup (with rice) Restaurant, Milyang Sikdang

In this content, We'd like to introduce another hidden restaruant in Daegu — Milyang Sikdang at Bukseongno, which is the birthplace of Dwaeji Gukbap, or "Daegu-style Pork Soup with Cooked Rice."

Milyang Sikdang (Restaurant)

This area is nicknamed "Seoseongno" that located at the western part of the city. And this place is also the birthplace of Daegu-style pork soup with cooked rice. There are only three restaurants left at this region, which used to be a "Gukbap Street," including the famous gukbap restaurants like Aunt Restaurant, No. 8 Restaurant, and Milyang Restaruant.

Today's destination is Milyang Restaurant, Milyang Sikdang. This is the oldest restaurant at Seoseongno. This place has been running for 61 years, and serves the original pork rice soup.

It consists of simple side dishes — hot pepper, garlic, onion, and kimch. This is the basic menus from the restaurant's beginning! You wouldn't miss the extra seasonings and salted&fermented shrimp, of course.

Milyang Sikdang's signature menus are Gogi Gukbap (pork soup with cooked rice) and Sundae Gukbap (cooked rice soup with Korean-style stuffed intestine). This restaurant brings a whole pig that used in the soup. You could taste the savory taste in the soup because it is made with meat too.

Unlike regular rice soup with all ingredients at once, Gogi Backban consists of cooked rice, soup, meat, ssam (various vegetables), all are separated. Unlike others, Milyang Sikdang's meat is cold, not warm, the texture is very chewy, and dthe meat-and-fat distribution are quite appropriate.

The second dish to taste is Sundae Gukbap. Unlike the other two companies, Milyang Sikdang's sundae (Korean-style blood sausage) is said to be made only by using local intestines so it has very chewy texture and real jam-packed contents. In the past, Sundae was made from the blood only, but it is made of complex ingredients such as glass noodles, perilla powder, bean sprouts and green onions to capture the tongue of young people.

Come, visit and taste the original broth of Daegu! How about trying a bowl of warm soup and Milyang Sikdang, the original restaurant at Seoseongno — especially when it's raining? It would warm up your stomach!
