Spend
your holidays with Chuseok Food! Ddeok, Jeon and more!
Sonpyeon
and Kkochi-jeon Will Eventually Win Your Heart
I hope you are having wonderful days off starting last weekend! If you are staying in your Korean friend’s house for this season of the year, you will surely notice the following two dishes I am going to recommend you today! Yes, they are Ddeok and Jeon. Ddeok stands for rice cake and Jeon for pan-fried dish. These dishes are common during Korean holidays like Chuseok and Seollal since both of them are used for a memorial ritual.
Ddeok
떡
Ddeok is commonly consumed throughout year in
Korea, especially during Korean Thanksgiving Day, Chuseok. Among different
kinds of rice cakes, Songpyeong is the one that symbolizes Chuseok holidays.
Lately, many people prefer to purchase some at a rice cake store but, still,
many family gather together in a kitchen or living room to make songpyeon
together. Fillings ranges from honey, chestnut and sesame seed to beans. What differentiates
songpyeon from other rice cakes is that it is steamed over a thin layer of 솔잎. Not only this makes
presentation of songpyeon visually appealing, 솔잎 deepens the tastes by adding its distinctive scent.
Jeon
전
You probably recognize this word from pajeon.
In fact, there are a number of types of jeon with a variety of ingredient such
as fish, meat, vegetable, seafood, flower, etc. Jeon was very special dish
before the industrialization since it takes a lot of oil to cook one. Moreover,
it takes time and effort to prepare ingredients and cook in right shapes! You
may be more familiar with the name buchimgae 부침개.
Throughout Chuseok sean which typically spans more than 3 days, Koreans does
not stop stuffing themselves with jeon, ddeok and other Chuseok snack ;)
Where to Try
Ddeok-jeon St. |
Every traditional market “sijang 시장” has at least one rice cake
or jeon store. If you are a traveler who is touring around downtown, you can
also check out the rice cake/jeon street behind Hyundai Department Store.
Best Dishes to Match with Jeon/Ddeok
As you can imagine, after the greasy feast, we
start to want some food that can cleanse the greasiness. One of the best ways
to do it is to eat spicy food like yukgaejang and jjimgalbi! Even if you haven’t
eaten any of jeon, I recommend you try these dishes for their own sake. Both of
them are on the list of 10 Taste of Daegu. Here are some list of selected
restaurants.
